New approaches for conducting usage studies
Extraordinary times call for extraordinary approaches and methods.
How can user studies be conducted meaningfully and effectively without physical contact or presence – especially during times when social interaction is restricted? The Allround Team faced this very question – and discovered a forward-looking solution.
While working from home and attending online meetings became the “new normal,” the rule in retail and public spaces was clear: maintain distance and minimize contact. Yet, precisely during such periods, it is crucial not to lose sight of users’ needs. Even if the development of new products slows down, the core question remains: how do people respond to new designs, features, or interfaces? And how can we capture these reactions in a valid way?
Remote studies as a solution
The Allround team opted for contactless study formats at an early stage. Instead of inviting test participants to our premises, we developed a system that enables participation from home – independently, flexibly, and securely. In doing so, we rely on a technology with which our development team already has prior experience: virtual reality (VR).

VR as an immersive testing environment
The idea was conceived quickly: we send VR headsets to test participants and have them immerse themselves in a simulation that presents videos and concepts for them to evaluate. The advantages are obvious:
- Realistic representation enables authentic reactions
- Standardized procedures ensure comparable results
- Contactless execution minimizes infection risks and increases flexibility
Challenges & Solutions
Two key challenges emerged with the first prototype:
- Varying levels of prior experience with VR – not all test participants are familiar with the technology.
- Absence of an on-site test administrator – responses must be captured and documented automatically.
Our solution: A user-friendly system that is intuitive to operate and features an integrated recording function. This allows responses to be recorded directly and transcribed later – entirely without the need for in-person assistance.

More than a technical solution
Drawing on expertise, empathy, and a rigorous methodological approach, we have developed a system that is not only technically functional but also thoughtfully designed from a social and psychological perspective. Participants can take their time in a familiar environment, focus on the content, and share their impressions – free from pressure or haste.
For many, using a VR headset is a new experience, yet there is great interest in innovative technologies. Our studies show that, with the right guidance and a clear procedure, even complex test scenarios can be successfully conducted remotely.
Conclusion
Remote studies using VR are more than just a response to pandemic-related restrictions; they represent a step toward future-proof research that is flexible, inclusive, and technologically advanced. They also demonstrate that, even in extraordinary times, significant insights can be gained – provided one is willing to explore new approaches.
